Part-time Work

Because the primary goal of international students is to study or conduct academic research their residence status is “student.” If an international student with the residence status of “student” wishes to work part-time, he or she must receive permission from the immigration office, entitled “Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted.” The student must follow the regulations, including permitted working hours, etc.

Please be aware that a student who engages in work without permission, works more than the permitted hours, or does a type of work not permitted is considered to have violated the law. If this happens, that student is no longer allowed to study in Japan.

Other remarks regarding Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted

It is recommended for those students who may be interested in working part-time to apply for permission in advance, as it is possible to apply for the permission prior to securing a part-time job.

  • International students do not need this permission when they are enrolled at Iwate University (with the residence status of “student”) and their work is either teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA).
  • The spouses of international students (with the residence status of “dependent”) are also required to apply for permission if they want to work.
